Sponge Twists

Wave & Sponge Texture Family

Sponge twists are short, defined twists or coils formed by rubbing a twist sponge, a sponge with holes, in small circles over short coily hair. They take minutes and are often paired with a fade or taper.

Distinguishing characteristics

The sponge's holes catch and coil the hair, so the twists form all at once rather than section by section. The result is shorter and less uniform than comb coils or two-strand twists.

Advantages

Very fast, inexpensive and easy to do yourself.

Considerations

Short-lived definition, and can lead to matting at the roots if never detangled.

Warning signs

Matting or breakage means the hair needs a proper detangle.

Preparation

Works best on about one to three inches of coily hair. Apply a light leave-in or twisting cream first.

Daily Care

Re-sponge the twists lightly to tighten them and moisturise.

Night Care

Wear a satin cap or durag to keep them defined.

Washing

Washing loosens the twists; re-sponge afterwards.

Scalp Care

Keep products light to avoid buildup.

Refreshing

A quick re-sponge in circles brings the twists back.

Styling tips

Pair with a high-top, a taper or a burst fade.
