Wig Install
Wig Install Family
Illustration -- About our illustrations
A Wig Install fits and secures a prepared wig over a planned natural-hair foundation. The wig's cap, coverage and attachment method determine how it is worn and removed; the service name alone does not tell you whether glue or leave-out is involved.
Distinguishing characteristics
A complete wig unit is secured to the head rather than wefts being attached directly across the natural hair. Lace-front, full-lace and leave-out designs need different fitting discussions. Clips, combs, bands and adhesives have different contact and removal considerations.
Advantages
Offers a change in visible length, color or cut through a separate unit. Removable options can allow direct access to natural hair between wears.
Considerations
Fit, attachment care and the hair underneath still need attention. Leave-out can require its own styling, and adhesive or clip use can cause problems even when the unit looks natural.
Warning signs
Stop an attachment that hurts or triggers a rash. Persistent irritation, sores or thinning at the hairline or clip sites needs assessment.
Preparation
Discuss cap size, coverage, leave-out, attachment, scalp access and removal frequency. Review reactions to adhesive or tape and the condition of hair at clip or comb sites. A fitted unit should not depend on painful braiding underneath.
Daily Care
Care for the unit according to its actual hair or fiber instructions while also checking the natural-hair foundation. Do not pull on the lace or add extra glue to compensate for an uncomfortable fit.
Night Care
If the unit is removable, follow the fitted removal and storage plan. If worn overnight, keep the foundation and covering loose and avoid sleeping on painful attachment points.
Washing
Plan separate cleansing of the scalp/natural hair and the unit. Human-hair and synthetic units may require different products or heat limits; check the actual label rather than assuming all wigs can be treated alike.
Scalp Care
Inspect hairline contact areas and clip sites. Adhesives should not be treated as harmless simply because the cap covers them; prolonged rubbing or pulling also matters.
Refreshing
Have lifting lace, slipping bands or uncomfortable clips assessed. Refitting should solve the cause of movement instead of adding increasing pressure or adhesive over irritated skin.
Removal
Release each fastening or adhesive using the fitted system's directions. Never tear lace or a bonded edge away from natural hair; arrange help if the hairline is caught.
Styling tips
Choose the intended parting and finish with the fitter, then confirm which features the cap actually allows. Use heat or chemical services only if the unit's instructions permit them. Check how the hairline and fastenings will behave in your normal styles rather than assuming every wig can be parted or secured the same way.

Wig Install: A Cap-Based Construction, Not a Sewn or Glued-to-Scalp Method
A wig install secures a pre-made unit -- hair already attached to a lace, full-lace, or partial (U-part/V-part) cap -- onto the wearer's own hair, which is typically braided down flat or banded first. The cap itself is then held in place with adhesive, an elastic band, combs, or a combination. This is mechanically distinct from Sew-In Weave (individual wefts sewn onto cornrow tracks) and Quick Weave (wefts glued directly to a cap or the scalp/braid base) -- here the hair unit and the securing mechanism are two separate steps, and no weft is sewn or glued directly onto the natural hair itself.
FAQs
- Can I use the same heat settings on every wig?
No. Human-hair and synthetic wigs behave differently, and some synthetic fibres melt. Check the wig's own instructions before using heat or chemical products.
- How do I care for the hair underneath?
Keep a separate routine for your scalp and natural hair: cleanse and moisturise it regularly, and give it breaks from the wig. A finished wig does not show the condition of the hair underneath.
