Twist-Outs

Illustration -- About our illustrations

A twist-out is a natural-hair style made by setting damp, product-coated hair in two-strand twists, letting it dry completely, then unravelling and separating the twists to reveal soft, defined curls with lots of volume.

Distinguishing characteristics

The pattern comes from the twist set, not from heat or chemicals. Twist size controls the result: smaller twists give tighter, more defined curls; larger twists give looser, bigger waves. It differs from a braid-out, whose three-strand set gives a crimped wave.

Advantages

Uses only your own hair and simple products; defined, voluminous curls without heat.

Considerations

Results vary with humidity and dryness; a twist-out taken down damp can frizz.

Warning signs

Excessive breakage when unravelling suggests the hair is too dry; condition more and separate more gently.

Preparation

Start with clean, conditioned, detangled hair. Apply a leave-in and a styler (cream, butter or gel), then twist in even sections. The twists must be fully dry before you take them down.

Daily Care

Avoid combing; fluff the roots with fingers or a pick and leave the curls alone through the day.

Night Care

Pineapple the hair under a satin bonnet, or re-twist in a few large twists to preserve the pattern.

Washing

Wash on your normal wash day and re-set the twists; a twist-out usually lasts a few days to a week.

Scalp Care

Use light products at the roots so the scalp stays clean between washes.

Refreshing

Mist with water and a little leave-in, then re-twist large sections overnight.

Removal

Unravel each twist from the end with oiled fingertips, then separate gently for volume.

Styling tips

Wear it out, in a high puff, or pinned to one side. Small twists give more definition, large twists more volume.

Twist-Outs as a No-Extension Natural-Texture Style

A twist-out sets natural hair in two-strand twists on damp hair, lets it dry or sets overnight, then unravels each twist to reveal a defined, textured wave-and-curl pattern -- no extension hair is added at any point, which gives it a materially lower tension and traction-risk profile than every extension-based style in this catalog. It is one of the most widely documented natural-hair styling techniques in contemporary Black hair-care sources.
