Taper
Clipper Cut Family
A taper is a clipper cut that shortens the hair gradually only at the sideburns and neckline, leaving more length on the rest of the sides and back than a fade. It gives a clean, natural edge that suits twists, Afros, locs and curly tops.
Distinguishing characteristics
The graduation is limited to the edges. A temple taper (temp fade) concentrates the short blend at the temples and sideburns; a full fade carries the gradient around the whole head.
Advantages
Low-maintenance, subtle and suitable for longer textured tops.
Considerations
Less dramatic contrast than a fade.
Warning signs
Irritation or ingrown hairs at the neckline.
Preparation
Tell your barber how much length to keep on the sides and whether you want a sharp line-up at the hairline.
Daily Care
Moisturise and shape the hair on top; keep the edges clean.
Night Care
Protect the top with a satin cap or durag.
Washing
Wash as usual.
Scalp Care
Watch for bumps at the neckline after a close cut.
Refreshing
Tapers grow out more gracefully than fades; a clean-up every two to four weeks keeps the edges sharp.
Styling tips
Popular with sponge twists, two-strand twists, Afros and locs.
