Spring Twists

Illustration -- About our illustrations

Spring twists are small to medium twists made with springy, tightly coiled extension hair, giving a bouncy, defined coil from root to tip. They are lighter and shorter-looking than many other twist styles because the coiled hair compresses.

Distinguishing characteristics

The springy, pre-coiled extension hair defines the style. It can be hand-twisted onto your natural hair, or bought as ready-made coiled pieces that are attached with a crochet method; the two give different root looks, so ask which one your stylist uses.

Advantages

Light and bouncy, quick to install, and a playful short-to-medium look.

Considerations

Coils can frizz and tangle faster than smooth twists, so this style tends not to last as long.

Warning signs

Tightness, soreness or bumps at the roots or hairline mean the twists are too tight.

Preparation

Start with clean, stretched hair and confirm whether the install will be hand-twisted or crocheted. Buy the coiled hair in the length you want to wear, because it sits shorter than its stretched length.

Daily Care

Spray lightly with water and a little leave-in to keep the coils defined. Avoid brushing or combing the coils.

Night Care

Pineapple the twists loosely in a satin bonnet so the coils are not crushed.

Washing

Wash the scalp gently with diluted shampoo and squeeze the coils dry; avoid rubbing, which frizzes them.

Scalp Care

Keep product light at the roots and oil the parts if your scalp feels dry.

Refreshing

Snip frizzy ends and mist the coils with water to bring back their spring.

Removal

Cut the extension below your natural ends and untwist, or undo the crochet anchors if they were crocheted.

Styling tips

Bob-length spring twists are a classic; burgundy and other bold colours show off the coil.

Culture & history

Spring Twists and Pre-Curled Extension Hair

Spring twists use the same two-strand rope-twist construction shared across this family, but with extension hair that is pre-twisted/pre-curled at the factory into a tight spring coil before installation, giving the finished twist a springy bounce-back quality and a tighter, more naturally-textured curl than Senegalese or Passion Twists. As with Marley and Havana Twists, what genuinely differs from its rope-twist siblings is the extension material's pre-treatment, not the twisting technique itself.
