Soft Locs

Illustration -- About our illustrations

Soft locs are a lightweight faux-loc style, usually made by wrapping soft, wavy extension hair around a pre-made crochet loc that is attached to your braided or twisted hair. The result is flexible and moves more freely than traditional wrapped faux locs.

Distinguishing characteristics

Softness comes from the core and the wrap: a light pre-made loc as a foundation and smooth, soft wrapping hair over it, rather than wrapping a stiff cylinder directly on your braid. They look neat like faux locs but bend and swing more.

Advantages

Lighter and more flexible than many faux locs, and comfortable to wear up soon after installation.

Considerations

The soft wrapping hair can frizz sooner than a tight wrap.

Warning signs

Soreness, bumps or thinning edges mean the base is too tight.

Preparation

Start with clean, stretched hair. Ask the stylist which loc core and wrapping hair they use, and choose your length.

Daily Care

Moisturise the scalp and roots lightly; the locs themselves need little product.

Night Care

Wear a satin bonnet or loosely wrap the locs.

Washing

Wash gently with diluted shampoo on the scalp and dry the locs thoroughly.

Scalp Care

Keep the parts clean and check the hairline for tension.

Refreshing

Smooth frizz with a light mousse and re-wrap any loosened ends.

Removal

Unwrap the wrapping hair and detach the loc core, then take down your base carefully.

Styling tips

Bob and waist-length soft locs are popular; honey-brown and other warm tones suit the soft finish.

Culture & history

Soft Locs as a Looser, Blended Faux-Loc Finish

Soft locs follow the same wrapped-extension construction as Faux Locs, but the wrap is deliberately looser to allow more natural movement from installation onward, and is often finished by wrapping a lightly separated curl or twist-textured hair over a pre-made loc core rather than a single uniform wrap. Sources are consistent that this is a finishing-technique distinction from standard faux locs, not a different base construction.
