Micro Braids

Individual Braid Family

Micro braids are very small individual braids, usually made with extension hair and braided from the root to the ends. Because the sections are tiny, a full head contains hundreds of braids that move and style almost like loose hair.

Distinguishing characteristics

Size is the defining feature: sections are much smaller than standard box or knotless braids, often only a few millimetres across. They can be installed with a small knot at the base or with a knotless start. There is no single size cut-off; micro means the smallest end of the individual-braid range.

Advantages

Very versatile: they can be curled, pinned up or worn like loose hair. A natural, lightweight look and long wear time when well maintained.

Considerations

Long installation and removal. Tiny sections can stress fine or fragile hair, and matting at the roots is a risk if they stay in too long.

Warning signs

Breakage at the roots, sore spots, small bumps or thinning at the edges mean the braids are too tight or have been in too long.

Preparation

Expect a long appointment, often a full day or more. Start with clean, deep-conditioned, fully stretched hair. Discuss whether your hair is strong enough for very small sections, and avoid micro braids on fine or fragile edges.

Daily Care

Keep a light leave-in on the lengths. Handle the hair as you would loose hair, without twisting or pulling at the roots.

Night Care

Gather the braids loosely into a satin bonnet or a loose pineapple; tiny braids tangle more easily if left to rub on cotton.

Washing

Wash carefully with diluted shampoo focused on the scalp and rinse well. Avoid rough scrubbing, which can loosen and frizz the small braids, and dry thoroughly.

Scalp Care

With so many parts, buildup collects quickly; use light products and cleanse regularly.

Refreshing

Re-braiding the hairline section can extend wear. Avoid tightening loose braids on your own.

Removal

Removal is slow and is the stage where most damage happens. Take each braid out patiently, use a conditioner or detangling spray, and do not leave micro braids in so long that new growth mats at the base.

Styling tips

Micro braids can be worn loose, in high ponytails once settled, in buns, or curled with rollers. Blonde and highlighted micro braids are a popular colour choice.

Culture & history

Micro Braids as a Fine-Gauge Individual-Braid Tradition

Micro braids sit within the same individual-braiding tradition documented across West African hairdressing (see the Box Braids and Knotless Braids cultural notes for the shared root); what distinguishes micro braids is gauge, not a separate lineage -- sections are taken small enough to produce dramatically finer, more numerous braids than the standard box-braid range. That finer gauge is well documented as changing the installation-time and per-braid tension profile enough that this catalog treats it as its own style rather than a size option, so its safety guidance can speak specifically to a much higher attachment-point count.
