Goddess Braids

Thick Braid & Wrap Family

Also known as: goddess cornrows

Goddess braids are large, raised cornrows, usually made with feed-in extension hair so each row looks thick and smooth from root to end. They are fewer and bigger than everyday cornrows, giving a bold, sculpted look that can be worn straight back, swept to the side or wrapped into a crown or bun.

Distinguishing characteristics

Goddess braids are defined by scale: a small number of wide, raised cornrows rather than many fine rows. They are typically built with the feed-in method, adding hair gradually so the row starts slim at the hairline and grows fuller. Curly ends or left-out curly pieces are a common finish but not required.

Advantages

Quicker to install than many small cornrows. A striking, polished look that suits formal occasions and is easy to style into updos.

Considerations

Few large rows put more weight on each anchor point, so tension at the hairline matters. The bold look shows frizz and new growth sooner than smaller patterns.

Warning signs

Throbbing, bumps or pimples along the rows, or soreness that lasts more than a day or two, mean the rows are too tight. Remove them early rather than enduring pain.

Preparation

Decide how many rows you want and where they will end (back, side, crown or bun). Arrive with clean, detangled, stretched hair. Large rows carry more extension hair, so discuss weight and ask for a gentle hairline.

Daily Care

Mist the lengths with a light leave-in or water-based moisturiser and smooth them with your palms. Avoid scratching the parts with nails.

Night Care

Cover the rows with a satin scarf, tied firmly enough to keep them flat but not tight on the hairline.

Washing

Wash gently with diluted shampoo directed at the scalp between the rows, rinse well and blot. The thick rows take a long time to dry, so allow plenty of air-dry time or use a hooded dryer on a cool setting.

Scalp Care

With wide rows, more scalp is exposed between them; protect it from sun and apply a light oil sparingly to the parts.

Refreshing

Smooth frizz with a little mousse and tie the hair down with a scarf for twenty minutes.

Removal

Snip any extension hair below your natural ends, then unravel each row from the end towards the root, detangling the shed hair as you go.

Styling tips

Popular versions include two goddess braids, side-swept rows, a crown that wraps the head, and rows that finish in a bun. Gold cuffs along a row and curly ends add a softer finish.
