Frohawk
Afro & Wash-and-Go Family
Illustration -- About our illustrations
A frohawk gives natural hair a mohawk silhouette without shaving: the sides are pinned, twisted, braided or cut short, and the centre is left full and raised. It differs from faux hawk braids, where the centre and sides are all braided.
Distinguishing characteristics
The centre is loose natural hair (an Afro, twist-out or curls), and the sides are flattened by pinning, flat twisting, braiding or a fade. The frohawk describes the shape, so the side method varies.
Advantages
A bold shape that shows off natural texture and works for events and everyday.
Considerations
Pinned sides can loosen during the day and need re-pinning.
Warning signs
Headaches or sore spots at pin points mean it is too tight.
Preparation
Decide how the sides will be held and how tall the centre should be. Stretched or defined hair (a twist-out or wash-and-go) gives the centre its shape.
Daily Care
Re-pin loose sections and refresh the centre with water and a light leave-in.
Night Care
Wrap the sides with a satin scarf and protect the centre with a loose bonnet.
Washing
Pinned frohawks are short-term; wash and re-style as needed.
Scalp Care
Pins and upward-directed sides pull towards the centre; check the temples for tension.
Refreshing
Re-fluff the centre and smooth the sides with gel or mousse.
Styling tips
Pair it with a fade for a sharper edge, flat-twisted sides for a protective option, or a curly centre for softness.

FAQs
- How are the sides of a frohawk made?
There is no single method. The sides can be pinned, flat twisted, braided or faded, while the centre stays loose natural hair. Frohawk describes the finished shape, so tell your stylist which side method you want.
