Braid-Outs
Set & Release Family
Illustration -- About our illustrations
A braid-out is a natural-hair style made by braiding damp, product-coated hair, letting it dry fully, then unbraiding and separating it for a crimped, wavy texture with volume.
Distinguishing characteristics
The three-strand braid set produces a flatter, zigzag wave than the rounder curl of a twist-out. Braid size and the number of braids control the result; some people braid on the scalp like cornrows for a stretched root.
Advantages
A stretched, voluminous texture without heat, using only your own hair.
Considerations
Needs full drying time, and humidity can loosen the wave.
Warning signs
Breakage while unbraiding means the hair needs more moisture and gentler separation.
Preparation
Start with clean, conditioned, detangled hair. Apply a leave-in and styler, braid in even sections and let the braids dry completely, overnight or under a hooded dryer.
Daily Care
Fluff the roots with fingers or a pick and avoid combing through the waves.
Night Care
Pineapple under a satin bonnet, or re-braid in a few large braids.
Washing
Wash on your usual schedule and re-set; a braid-out typically lasts several days.
Scalp Care
Keep heavy products off the scalp between washes.
Refreshing
Mist lightly and re-braid large sections overnight.
Removal
Unbraid gently from the ends with oiled fingertips, then separate for volume.
Styling tips
Small braids give tighter crimps; large braids give soft waves. Wear it out, half-up, or in a side part.

Braid-Outs as the Plaited Counterpart to the Twist-Out
A braid-out follows the same set-and-release logic as a twist-out, but sets the hair in three-strand plaits rather than two-strand twists before unraveling, producing a crimped rather than a coiled wave pattern. Like the twist-out, no extension hair is used, so tension/traction risk is materially lower than any extension-based style in this catalog.
