360 Waves

Illustration -- About our illustrations

360 waves are a rippling wave pattern that circles the whole head from the crown, created on short curly or coily hair by consistent brushing, moisture and compression with a durag. The waves are trained over weeks, not cut in.

Distinguishing characteristics

The pattern comes from brushing the hair in the same direction from the crown outward, so the natural curl lies in aligned ripples. 180 waves cover the front and sides only, and 540 or 720 refer to more complex crown patterns. Wolfing means letting the hair grow between cuts while you keep brushing to deepen the waves.

Advantages

A sharp, low-maintenance look once the pattern is trained.

Considerations

Takes weeks of consistent brushing to develop.

Warning signs

Bumps, irritation or breakage from over-brushing or a tight durag.

Preparation

Start with a short, even cut. You will need a soft and a medium brush, a moisturiser or pomade and a durag.

Daily Care

Brush in the direction of the pattern several times a day, especially after washing or moisturising.

Night Care

Wear a durag to compress the hair and hold the pattern.

Washing

Wash gently, brush while damp and put on the durag to set the pattern.

Scalp Care

Heavy pomades can cause buildup and bumps; cleanse the scalp regularly.

Refreshing

Ask your barber to cut with the grain so the waves aren't cut away, and keep brushing while wolfing.

Styling tips

Combine with a low fade, a taper or a Caesar cut.
